Product Description
The SN65HVD1050 meets or exceeds the specifications of ISO 11898 and is suitable for applications employing a controller area network (CAN). As a CAN transceiver, this device provides differential transmit capability to the bus and differential receive capability to the CAN controller at signaling rates up to 1 megabit per second (Mbps). The SN65HVD1050 is designed for operation in especially harsh environments. As a result, the device features cross-wire, overvoltage, and ground-fault protection from –27 V to 40 V, overtemperature shutdown, a common-mode range of –12 V to 12 V, and can withstand voltage transients from –200 V to 200 V per ISO 7637. Pin 8 offers two different operating modes: high-speed mode or silent mode. High-speed operation is selected by grounding the S pin (pin 8). If a high logic level is applied to the S pin of the SN65HVD1050, the device enters a listen-only silent mode during which the driver is shut off and the receiver remains fully functional. In silent mode, all bus activity is relayed to the local protocol controller through the receiver output. When data transmission is required, the local protocol controller removes this low-current silent mode by applying a logic low to the S pin to resume full operation. The dominant timeout circuit in the SN65HVD1050 prevents the driver from blocking network communications in the event of a hardware or software malfunction. This timeout circuit is triggered by a falling edge on the TXD pin (pin 1). If a rising edge is not detected before the timeout period of the circuit has elapsed, the driver is disabled. The next rising edge on the TXD pin then resets the circuit. The Vref pin (pin 5) can be used as a VCC/2 voltage reference for stabilizing the output common-mode voltage point. The SN65HVD1050 is specified for operation over the ambient temperature range of –40°C to 125°C.
